Google Summer of Code

Tuesday, April 17th, 2007

I know that this isn’t exactly new information but I thought I would talk about it because I find it interesting. So earlier this year Google announced a competition called the Google Summer of Code. The competition is slated to compete college and university students around the world against each other for a chance to get paid $4500 to work on the idea of there choice all summer. Of the 6200 applications 900 students were accepted covering some 300 different projects. For those of you doing the math, Google will be paying $4,050,000 in an effort to help fund student developers this summer. There are a number of projects including most notably Wordpress, the Mozilla Foundation, and a number of Linux distributions. I look forward to seeing what this kind of big name involvement on the small level will bring to the many coding communities Google has now invested in. For a complete list projects selected and the goals they aim to address over the summer check out the Google Summer of Code (SOC).

Our Future With Adobe CS3

Friday, April 13th, 2007

So earlier this week I had the benefit of attending a Photoshop users conference at the Adobe headquarters in downtown San Jose. It was a fantastic little informational meeting that was structured around audience interest. I learned a tun of sweet little tricks for LightRoom like when you go to publish your photos to the web in a gallery you can press Shift+Ctrl+Alt+/ to allow you to modify a much wider selection of attributes for the gallery. I also learned a bunch of stuff from the soon to be released Adobe CS3. All of which are frankly just a bit to complicated to explain in blog form. There is also the issue of the contract I signed upon entering the building. However, by lets just pick a random day… lets say… maybe Sunday, or possibly some time next week, I am not sure I am just guessing. But maybe, just maybe, the whole contract issue wont be such a problem. I mean its really all up in the air but maybe. But I will give a word to tantalize you all, zoomify.

I will say this. CS3 is going to be a BIG step forward for the power user. Everything from cross integration to better design flow has been improved. Adobe has included some smaller nifty little tricks so have no fear everyone will have something to benefit from CS3. But just in case I haven’t hyped CS3 up enough yet. Let me say one last thing. CS3 is going to be a VERY, VERY, VERY, HUGE improvement over CS2. That is about it for today…

Google Calendar

Sunday, March 18th, 2007

I was just investigating how to embed Google Calendar in WordPress and to my surprise this is one topic that isn’t extensively covered from beginning to end by the army of WordPress users. It is addressed but there is no definitive solution like most issues raised in the WordPress community. There is a plugin and a widget that people have been using but it appears neither do a great job or work 100% of the time. I, however, have managed to implement Google Calendar in a very easy and clean way that suits my needs. So I will be releasing a full write up on how I did it for you all to see soon. Until then go check out my calendar, it’s a bit barren but I will be using more now that I have a real use for it.

Women Files Law Suit Against Archive.org

Saturday, March 17th, 2007

So for whatever reason there is a crazy women who has decided to sue Archive.org for copy right infringement. She has apparently created a section of her website devoted to her right for copyright over her words. In it she says that if a bot or spider of any kind crawls her site.

So basically, what I think is going on here is that she found a loop whole in the fundamental way that the internet works and is set up and has decided to sue any and all companies that crawl her site. I honestly can’t see any of these law suits falling in her favor but if by chance one did they would clearly be in the likes of the McDonald’s hot coffee law suit. It really just feels like a claim for attention more then anything but I say make your own opinion of the situation and check out for your self here and the digg article here if that tickles your fancy.

Anywho, I am off to enjoy the rest of St. Patrick’s Day but this was just to ridiculous to pass up.
