New Music Reviews

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

It has been a long time since I promised a review of the then just released Neon Bible by The Arcade Fire. I unfortunately have been super busy but I promised to get to it and that day is today. I will also include, as promised, a review of Brand New’s 2006 release The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me because even after a year it is so good that it deserves my attention. Now, on with the reviews…

The Arcade Fire - Neon Bible

For fans of the Arcade Fire the newly released and highly anticipated fallow up LP to the cult classic Tunnels, will likely sit in an odd sport at first. Something about it just isn’t Tunnels but after a few listens and a chance to really listen for all of that Arcade Fire goodness it will become very apparent just how good it is. Neon Bible’s first track Black Mirror might be what is throwing me off with its dark subtle march. However, with tracks like Keep the Car Running, Intervention, and No Cars Go there is a tun of old gut wrenching beauty that was so common with Tunnels. These tracks have the epic rises and elaborate intramental that have made The Arcade Fire a Canadian indie treat for years. While the other tracks have a much more somber tone and feel they blend well. Overall, this is a must buy for indie fans but I would still reference Tunnels when introducing new friends to The Arcade Fire. That is unless you have No Cars Go cued up, because that song is simply AMAZING!

Brand New - The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me

If you have never listened to the amazing sounds of Brand New then all you need to know is just go buy them all. If you have been rocking out to the edgy, emotion filled sounds of Brand New for years then you likely already have this album as it came out in the early months of 2006. However, this album is so good it is worthy of some throwback attention. From its in your face tracks like Sowing Season (Yeah) and The Archer’s Bows Are Broken to the melancholy Jesus Christ, this album will keep you happily pleased for weeks (months if you let it). This is definitely the best release from these guys and is well worth a buy from fans and those new to Brand New’s sound.

So that is about it. For those of you who have been waiting months for this review I apologize for being so slow to getting this out. I have come to the conclusion that I will likely not be able to give this type of review for all of my 326 different artists and 548 albums ( 6100 songs exactly just in case you where wondering, but who is counting right?). I think the mere idea of it is deterring me from attempting so I am likely to just mention maybe some weekly picks? That sounds more do able and I can give more attention to those I feel need it. For now enjoy these albums and I will get back to you next week with new releases from The Kings Of Leon with their new album Because Of The Times and another oldie but goodie The Legion of Doom. Until next time… feel free to check out all of my listening habits at Last.fm.

New Category - This week: Music

Friday, March 16th, 2007

So in my attempt to blog more I have decided include more of the things I enjoy most in life. So in todays post, I will give a run down on some of the new music I have been listening to. I have been moderately involved with the music scene for some years and while I am no longer a DJ on the radio and no longer frequent shows every week; the experiences and people I have met have left me with a network of people who still remain heavily rooted in music. Let’s get this ball rolling…

Sherwood: A Different Light
Released last Tuesday and available in a record shop near you, these guys have been hitting the indie pop rock scene for some years now but have just recently signed to newly formed MySpace records. They have just released a new record titled “A Different Light” and it is, SO GOOD! For those of you new to Sherwood’s music you will have a great blend of their past styles and there present and for those who have already heard then there will be no disappointment here. With redone tracks off of their last Summer EP and a bunch of catchy new ones this is a solid LP from beginning to end. I have even had the benefit of meeting these guys a number of times and let me tell you, they are as down to earth and legit as they come. So run out snag a copy of their new release and watch for them in a city near you as they are going on tour with Relient K and Mae (both of which are amazing!).

Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster: II
This new album from Maylene is one of the best albums to come out this year. II will being hitting the stores next Tuesday and is well worth the trip to the store. With all the southern twang one could ever want with out going completely country (by God if that happens shoot me), these guys have mastered the southern rock style and brought it to the 21st century. Those of you who have snagged a copy of their previous self titled will find this equally as engaging as the last. While it may not have that munch you in the face feel of the last it will sure as hell make you want to get up and and rock out. And to top it off they too are on tour so keep an eye out.

That is it for today, but check back for reviews of the new Arcade Fire - Neon and a oldie but goodie Brand New’s 2006 release The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me. If you would like to see more of what I listen to on a regular basis you might also want to check out my last.fm account. I will also be adding more categories including Tech News and such so check back because things are achang’n around here. Lastly, a good friend of mine, Chris Gatihi, has just started blogging and has been posting some very spiritually engaging reads on his new blog so check it out here. Until tomorrow…
