Well, let me first begin with a sigh of relief, because the last three days while fun have been tiring. In my experiences in the last 3 days I have visited the MacWorld Expo twice, watch over a dozen presentations, seen thousands of products and software, sat in on three podcasts, been interviewed twice, partied with millionaires, and fulfilled a few childhood dreams.
To start with, my time at MacWorld was great. You might be asking, what on earth is a PC guy doing at the holy grail of the Apple Universe? Well, let me say this openly ladies and gentlemen, I AM A GEEK! And that means that I enjoy all things technological, even the ones I can’t/choose not to use. My other reasons for attending MacWorld were that being a creative professional, MacWorld is a great place to see new software, cameras, and accessories that I can use. I say that because thankfully most major software developers release their software on Windows as well as OSX. I got a chance to see the iPhone, which by the way looks damn sexy. If it works half as well as they say it will it will still be better then every phone in its class (trust me I own a Siemens SX66). I think it is a great step in the right direction but Apple always seems to hinder its products in some way and the iPhone is no different. Either way its a step in the right direction and that is good. If anything it will likely drive the rest of the industry to produce better, user friendly devices. I also got to see the AppleTV which to be completely honest does not impress me. I have more functionality out of my $35 modded XBOX (something anybody could do in five minutes).
Being a Windows user, who commonly carries both my windows based mobile phone as well as my windows based laptop, I feel that I have a duty to my fellow windows users to explain what it is like to be a Windows user surrounded by the most hardcore of hardcore Apple fans. The most common experience was that of vendors and expo attendees asking if and when I would be making the “smartest decision of my life,” that is switching to a Mac. My automated response for these questions was always “when the hardware prices are equal in both markets” because quite frankly Apple is just to over priced for a technologically literate person like myself who knows how to get what they want. Other experiences include my observations of the differences between Mac fans. The first thing my twenty year old eyes noticed was that the Apple faithful are largely in the thirty years old and up category, and I stress the “and up” part of that. This has led me to a hypothesis regarding the current increases in Mac sales. While I do understand and see how many people are frustrated and tired of problems from Microsoft (most of which are associated with user error). I do, however, think that most of these Apple faithful are in a position in their life where they can afford to purchase these more expensive computers. My second observation derives from a joke I read after my first day at MacWorld. The joke read “the differences between the Apple faithful and the Mac cultists is the difference between a black tee shirt and a black turtle neck.”

The cultist leader himself
Before I get hit by a slew of hateful comments remember, I’m just joking, kind of. One of the highlights of my MacWorld experience was had at the taping of DiggNation. I was fortunate enough to meet Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht (hosts of DiggNation) both on the show floor previous to the tapping and after the taping. I got some pictures, my laptop signed, and chatted it up with some of my geek hero’s. I was standing around after the DiggNation shoot and Shawn (one of the hosts of Your Mac Life) was standing around. I had watched the life taping of his podcast the day before so I decided I’d strike up a conversation with him. About forty minutes later he had to go but not before he personally invited Drew and I to his MacWorld after party.
The Your Mac Life MacWorld After Party was definitely a night to remember. Open bar, delicious free food, and awesome music made for a great night. Paul Kemp, yes that is right the founder of MacWorld, was rocking out on stage all night and rest a sured I’ll have photos up shortly.
That is about it for this extremely long post. I would like to point out that if you are ever at the Sony Metreon or the Moscone Center area in San Francisco there is a great little burger joint called Mo’s that serves up a pretty good burger. The last thing I would like to say is Microsoft recently released a bunch of commercials for its Windows Mobile department. I personally like the one with the snakes but check it out here. You can also check out pictures from MacWorld and Diggnation below and I will add photos from the Your Mac Life after party soon.
